Behaviour Management Policy

At Jack & Jill Nursery our emphasis is on promoting positive behaviour and we will create an environment that will support this. As role models for children we will demonstrate respect for self and others and self awareness and control. Our children are encouraged to express their emotions through play and discussion and where appropriate to provide their own solutions when in conflict situations, through discussion with staff members and each other. Nursery staff will employ strategies that are effective in supporting children's behaviour and understand the importance of adopting different strategies to support children's individual needs and to ensure behaviour does not become a barrier to learning.

Nursery staff will look for positive behaviour and individual effort and encourage this through praise, interest in what the child is doing and discussion. Nursery staff use the principles of circle time to assist in promoting children's emotional well being, social development and will be aware of spontaneous opportunities to support children to develop the skills to recognise and manage their emotions and behaviours and develop emotional literacy. Nursery staff will encourage positive behaviour through careful planning of the environment and daily routines to ensure children feel safe, secure and familiar with routines and minimise frustrations and situations that may cause conflict. Jack & Jill Nursery recognise the effect of diet on behaviour and the importance of healthy, nutritious food and our menus will reflect this. As part of the children's personal and social development they will learn, through example and experience, how to care, share, help, value and respect themselves and others.

In the event of unacceptable behaviour, a distraction or a moment's attention from one of our experienced staff is usually enough to remedy the situation. Children are encouraged to provide solutions to conflict situations through discussion with the nursery staff and each other, using emotional stories and puppets as supporting materials.

In the event of persistent unacceptable behaviour, every effort will be made in understanding why the behaviour is occurring - this may involve discussion with the parents / carers, observations of the child in nursery, and working in partnership to remedy the situation.

Under no circumstances will any child be smacked, slapped, shaken or demeaned by any member of staff or parents while in the nursery grounds.
